Text-only news postings compact just as well as any other text. I don't 
know whether any news clients actually offer compaction.

I'm not sure if you're asking or stating by your last sentence, but if 
you're asking: yes, certainly news clients have existed that download 
only the headers; whether any current ones have that ability, I again 
don't know.
