Update:
I copied the "prefs.js" from my working machine to my spare one, and the 
"HTTP Status code" add-on stopped working (the background script wasn't 
loaded anymore).    The plugin again worked when I restored the origional 
"prefs.js".

IOW, /some/ (about:config) setting stops the background script from being 
loaded/executed.  Any idea ?
