Maybe /emulate/ the desired result.  But the methodology as I understand

In summary -- assuming you read newsgroups in a specific unchanging* 
order (alphabetic?), you can add filters to newsgroups later in the read 
order list to mark messages posted to them as read /if/ they were cross 
posted to newsgroups that are earlier in the read order list.

a.1
b.2 mark messages cross posted to a.1 as read.
c.3 mark messages cross posted to a.1 and b.2 as read.
d.4 mark messages cross posted to a.1, b.2, and c.3 as read.

I am uncomfortable with "works even when out of order".  What is out of 
order matters.  If Daniel decides to switch things up and read the read 
order list backwards, there will be messages marked as read in d.4 that 
were cross posted to a.1, b.2, or c.3.

I agree that the order of the newsgroups appearance in the Newsgroups: 
header doesn't matter.

This seems very ... fragile to me.  Maintaining it (by hand) will be 
annoying, especially as the number of newsgroups grows.  At some point 
it will simply be untennable.

Does it logically work?  Yes.
Do I like it?  Nope.  Not at all.
Does it fake what Daniel is asking?  Kinda sorta.
Does it really do what Daniel is asking?  Nope.  Not at all.
