I wasn't sure, but that actually is a newsgroup! (Or was at some time.) 
[The only ones with thunderbird I could find are: one that's obviously 
about some AMD hardware; one that has .fr. in the name so I presume is 
French; ubc.residence.thunderbird, which I doubt is relevant; and two 
that start mozilla., which I assume will die.]

Is there any reason why we can't just migrate the existing names to the 
outside usenet, rather than creating new alt.* ones? I know it would be 
a new top-level whatever, but other such exist, such as demon.*, at 
least two of which still exist and are in use, despite Demon Internet 
having ceased to exist some years ago.
