Please open gnome-mplayer and go to the Edit->Preferences [Advanced] and
enable verbose debugging.

That should tell us why it is not working. On my machine a new window
opens and I get a pnm:// url in the top left of the window.. cache says
0 for a long time and then the media plays for a bout 2-3 seconds and
then it is done. Even with raw mplayer that is about the best output I
can get.
