Sounds like you compiled without gtk2 support. If you installed those
packages after running configure and then didn't rerun configure that is
why it would end up that way. Configure should have given you a warning
that is was compiling in X mode.

make distclean
./configure
make
make install

should fix your problem. As a rule of thumb anytime you install a -dev
package you should rerun configure to make sure that the new package is
picked up.
