I had this problem with all of my profiles when I updated to 1.7a along
with the bookmarks disappearing from the bookmarks menu and the personal
toolbar.

I solved this problem by systematically removing one by one all files
relating to the chrome. I eventually discovered the deleting
      panels.rdf
resolved my issues.
Somehow by removing just this file, something happens to make everything
work againg. And there was !!!NO!!! difference at all that I could see
between the deleted and the newly created 'panels.rdf' that was generated.

Mozilla moves in mysterious ways ;-)
