Yes, that can be done, I think.  Use Prefs -> MultiZilla -> Links 
-> Open new tabs for -> (External links | External programs)

I can't remember which of the two will work, so set them both.  
You'll also need to set the pref advanced.system.supportDDEExec 
to false (in about:config)

MultiZilla doesn't yet support Firefox.  See bug 2228
