After reading the additional postings here, I had an inspiration, and
was able to cure my symptom.
In the Tabs section of Multizilla preferences, there is a Tab Behavior
tab, at the bottom is "duplicated link protection" which I had turned on
at some point, as it sounds like a good idea. Turning it off cures this
symptom, and turning it back on causes it to recur.
Why did the symptom show up when it did? Not sure if I just didn't
notice the effect immediately, or if the check for "duplicated link" for
a tab is erroneous in some manner, or if it is affected somehow by a
change that Google has made. But after a search, the tab should have a
URL that is different than the URL for a new search... and different
than the URL for other search results. Yet somehow, when this setting is
turned on, if a tab has existing Google search results, then clicking
the bookmark for a new Google search takes one to the tab containing the
Google search results.
When I first noticed this, it was very irritating to me, and I think I
would have noticed it soon after it occurred, because I use Google
search heavily, and often have multiple search tabs open. It is for this
reason, that I think it is somehow affected by some change that Google
has made, but I don't know what change, and I haven't examined the
MultiZilla code to discover how it decides a tab is duplicated (since,
in this case, it seems that the URLs are different). I don't really
think that it happened at a time when I upgraded versions of SeaMonkey
or MultiZilla, as I have upgraded neither for quite some time (on this
particular machine), yet the symptom seemed to show up just in the last
few months.
SeaMonkey is 1.1.6 and MZ is 1.8.3.4e, here.
So I still haven't tracked down the source of the change in behavior,
but this is a work-around of sorts... is that setting possible to
customize on a site-by-site manner? I didn't look to see...
