yeah, it seems it can't be done that way.  However, 
make sure the tab you want to change is in focus, then 
right click on the tabbar {not the tab itself}, then 
select Toolbars, Customize Tab Label, and a popup will 
appear.  You can change it from there.   Or, a quicker 
way, make sure the tab is in focus, and hit F8.
