It's said that the user should become unaware of the version he/she is
using. At the same time, some kind of reference to the software status
is needed.

Most here obviously agree with me in that just hiding the version in
about dialog is a very bad idea.
I think a better solution for achieving this would have been to switch
to an Ubuntu-like versioning scheme. That way, Firefox 4 could have
been 11.03 and it would have been very easy to explain that the
version was now just a "timestamp" without much meaning.
Chrome had the quickly incrementing major version scheme from the
beginning, which makes it a different story in my opinion.

I'm not sure if changing the scheme again at this point makes sense,
but maybe yes, as e.g. Firefox 16.08 sounds much better to me then
Firefox 51.
