Re: Removing Firefox Version Number

In my 7 or so years using Mozilla Fire(fox|bird) I've opened up the
help->about dialog maybe a total of 20 times on various computers.
I've only ever gone there for one thing, the version number. This
change seems unnecessary. The thinking seems to be: you won't need
version numbers, but if you do, they are still available in help-
>troubleshooting . If version numbers are going to be around anyway
(via help->troubleshooting), people expect to find them in a
particular place, many users only function for the help->about dialog
is to find version numbers, and operating system's UX guidelines say
the version should be where it is, why are we removing it from that
location again? So that "normal" users don't have to see "confusing"
version numbers? Those normal users seem to be okay when dealing with
those confusing version numbers in every other installed app on their
computer. Is making things slightly less confusing for the downright
small minority of the browsers users who happen to go to help->about
and are then further confounded by those odd numbers that indicate a
version really worth the loss in community support and user
contentment this change seems to be breeding?

Auto-upgraded to firefox 6 and lost access to ReloadEvery addon which
is distributed by AMO but apparently didn't have a forced version bump
even though it's among the top 70 firefox add-ons. Must have not
passed the compatibility check. If we have a addon we'd like to keep
using, won't we need to know firefox version numbers to maintain
compatibility? Isn't help->about already a known, easy, and expected
way to get that information? The java console (which has been
mentioned before) also failed to pass the check.
