There is another use case for version numbers that I have not seen mentioned yet: 

When you are searching for help online regarding a problem, you will come across lots of information which may or may not be obsolete. 

To figure out whether the info you have found still applies to the version you are running, (hopefully and usually) the version number of the program the info refers to will be stated. This then allows for cross-referencing with other info etc.

Now, in the medium term, if noone routinely adds the version number to such posts anymore, because version numbers are phased out and/or not quickly and routinely accessible via "Help/About", this becomes a problem. There will simply be no easy way to refer to such issues. Or to put it the other way round, how do you say, for example, "this was fixed in Firefox 7"?
