Somewhat lost in this discussion about the version number is the
proposed change to the update mechanic.

I believe that applying an update without the explicit consent of the
user is a big mistake.  Not only will it forcibly break extensions
that the user may rely upon, it may disrupt the user with future UI or
feature changes, or introduce compatibility problems with some poorly
designed websites that the user may need.

I understand and agree with the desire to get as many people updated
to the latest version as possible, but feel that stripping this
control from the user would be worse, not to mention somewhat contrary
to Mozilla's mission.
