Item one is way too convoluted for me to get my head around, how about:

3) Removing the version number from About will mean initially fewer 
people find it but after a little inquisitiveness will find it and learn 
to accept that it is a far far better place it has gone because it 
provides a bunch more information that helps answer the question that 
probably caused me to look for the version number in the first place.

Personally, I don't have a major concern of it being in both places 
except for the problem associated with redundancy. For example, say the 
version number was stored in a central location that all areas that use 
it could pull from. Then, for whatever reason, a decision is made to 
change where that central location is at. This then opens a chance, 
albeit small, that not all places that pulled from the old location will 
be found and changed to the new one. Again, it's a nit but one is not an 
uncommon occurrence.
