Oh, they will. We only have offered them a "prompted" update to 4.0 one 
time, where we showed them a popup telling that a newer version is there 
and offered them to update, but they only did get unprompted automatic 
updates to further 3.6 versions.
I think we should do that more often and offer them the newer versions 
in this way as well, but so far we've not done that since the 4.0 release.
Once we stop supporting the 3.6 branch completely, we will probably send 
them an unprompted automatic update to a newer version - still only if 
they have unprompted automated updates activated at all, of course.
