1) We have been and continue to be working on reducing memory usage, a 
significant part of that will start to show up in the next release that 
is to come in about 5 weeks and is in Beta now, might help to try how 
much the newest beta helps you.

2) There is an "about:memory" page in newer version, at the bottom of 
which you actually _can_ force garbage collection.

I heard a lot of reports that Chrome actually uses way more memory than 
Firefox, esp. if you're opening a lot of tabs. Be careful to sum up the 
memory of all Chrome processes, though, or you'll only get a 
representation of a tiny fraction of what it actually uses.

Well, then you refuse an update to a version that already improves the 
memory story slightly...
