Why not just switch to IE or Safari?

For one thing, I can't, because they aren't available for Linux or OS/2.

It used to be:

Want fast scrolling? Grab the scroll button with the mouse or use PgUp/PgDn (no
wheels on any usable trackballs).

Want to keep some page position control? Use Up/Dn or click on a scroll-arrow
to move 1em/line at a time.

As of bug 635645, the latter convenient precision is history. Why does what IE,
Chrome and/or Safari do matter so much? Can't Gecko have some of its own
personality beyond extensions? Can't parity at least be limited to what happens
inside the viewport?

Periodically, monkey-see monkey-do whatever IE or Safari do reversions make it
necessary to add yet another unsupported version and profile. As of bug 635645,
I'll need to have rv1.8.1.20 (314365/314366/314367, editing the local filename
to change 1 character to load next instead of fishing in a file picker), rv
1.9.2.28 (for pages depending absolute sizes to do what they were designed to
do/537890), rv11.0 (635645), rv<current>, and rv<next> open all the time to be
able to do what needs doing - 5 Geckos and their extreme thirst for RAM. I'll
need at least 3GB RAM exclusively for Gecko browsers, plus whatever other apps
need. :~(

Could an extension undo bug 635645, or would a pref or reversion be required?
