Superfluous dropdown markers in Firefox v. 3.x

Why is it that the version 3 branch of Mac Firefox puts superfluous 
dropdown markers in the toolbar next to the back and forward buttons? 
It is annoying, spoils the appearance of the toolbar, is totally 
unnecessary, and has to be blocked by adding code to the browser.css 
file in themes.  What was the point of having Mac FF3 do that in the 
first place?
