Firefox memory usage

I love Firefox & was a Netscape user from way back. But does it have to be 
such a memory pig? Whenever my system slows down to a crawl, task manager 
shows Firefox and it's plug-in controller using the most memory and the 
longer I leave it open, the greater memory is consumed.
