The issue in https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=546932 deals with this issue. Contact sync can be done by using a cardDAV server like davical. Up until TB3 a SOGo addon has included cardDAV functionality for the TB address book. That was awsome, I used that to synchronize all my desktops (Windows and Linux) and additionally my android phone (via dmfs/carddav http://dmfs.org/carddav/) that was working like a charm. With TB5 the SOGo addon was not compatible any more and now it is quite frustrating. Anyway - if we can make CardDAV happen for TB that would solve the missing sync feature for Thunderbird Contacts.
