There is a menu setting for this. If you put Thunderbird into "Offline"
mode, then selecting a header will not download the message.
File >> Offline >> Work Offline

The "copy to clipboard" menu item is provided by the ImportExportTools
extension, which it appears you have installed. I suggest that you ask
the author of this extension.
