Which codecs are / should be useable for recording?

Over time I've tried various cvs versions of avifile with several both
native Linux codecs as win32 codecs for recording live tv with avicap
and avirec. Most codecs just give a segfault. The only codecs which
still seems to work is are the venerable hacked M$ divx versions.

Which codecs should work for recording? 

Btw It seems that using the codecs for playing gives much better
results.
