Initial Comment:
I wasnt able to compile avifile 0.7.38 and 0.7.37
(didnt try any older, so I dont know since when the
error exists exactly)

there is definitly an error within the #ifdefine
pragmas at the top of the file. 
Each time I compiled avifile, there was an error at
line 161 and 193, where a variable array of the type
modify_ldt_ldt_s is declared/used.

I could solve this problem by copying the lines where
the struct is declared to the top of the file. So
somehow it seems, that the declaration wasnt incudet
before.
