avifile vs libaviplay?

Hi,
I'm was looking for a library to read avi files and give me
access to individual frames. I came across avifile and
libaviplay. I would appreciate it if you could answer a few
questions:

1.  What is the difference between avifile and libaviplay?
 Is libaviplay simply the library resulting from avifile?

2.  Do I have to install the libraries using libtool?  is
this done automatically when I make install?   

3.  Which library do I use for reading avi's?  

Please be kind, I've never used libraries before...  any
tutorials/tips will be greatly appreciated.
