In one of my DVDAuthor XML files, I have the line

    <vob file="slidify xc:white /dev/stdout | spumux test_menu.xml |" pause="inf"/>

This uses the “varied_open” feature of DVDAuthor, where if the filename
string ends in a “|” character, then the rest of it is treated as a shell
command to be executed, and the output of that command is taken as the
contents of the “file”.

In this case, it uses my slidify script to create a one-second movie
consisting of nothing but a still white background, on top of which
the actual menu is composited using spumux.

Normally, you would invoke all these commands as separate steps. But by
putting them in the XML file, you can have dvdauthor automatically run
all the steps for you.

This also works with file names on the command lines. One place where it
doesn’t (yet) work is with the name of a subtitle text file in a spumux
XML file. I’m thinking of a way to implement that...
