I just realised after some more experimenting this might be an issue with MPlayer's dvdnav:// code, as it seems to only colour the entire rectangle. Playing the same content with Xine did show my arrows, but all arrows were visible the whole time. IIRC though in that test the button rectangles did not overlap the arrows which could explain why. At any rate, this is what I had done to try to make a coloured arrow appear next to a list of menu items, and as the up/down arrows are pressed the arrow moves up and down (and menu items that are not currently selected do not have an arrow next to them.) Please let me know if it sounds correct! I created an image with all seven arrows visible in black (for seven menu selections.) I then created seven rectangles, each enclosing a single arrow. I set the palette for "normal" so that all four colours were transparent, and for selected+highlighted the first colour was still transparent and the other three were coloured. It is my understanding that that the menu image is shown the entire time (with all four colours as transparent in my case) and as the button rectangle is moved around, the menu image within the rectangle is drawn in one of the alternate set of colours. Is that correct? I'm just guessing as I don't think I've seen it explained in so many words anywhere before! Unfortunately I lack a real DVD player to test this with, and it seems that MPlayer isn't 100% accurate and I'm still not sure about Xine. Also for the record I am using dvd_menu_animator[1] to generate the images, and it is correctly producing four colour indexed files.
