Googling “dvdauthor guide” brings up a few possibilities. There were
some older links on the DDVDAuthor home page
<http://dvdauthor.sourceforge.net/>—been a while since I checked how
relevant these still are.

The basic workflow is

    menu background video
                    +       -> spumux -> menu video
    button overlay graphics

    menu video
            +   -> dvdauthor -> complete DVD-Video directory structure
    title video

You specify up to 3 files for the button overlay graphics, which show
the buttons in “normal”, “highlighted” and “selected” states.

There are lots of GUI front ends that try to be complete DVD-Video
authoring environments—see the above DVDAuthor home page for links to
some of them. For myself, I tried to come up with the simplest tool
imaginable, which was DVD Menu Animator
<http://github.com/ldo/dvd_menu_animator>. This relies on Inkscape to
do the design, it just adds the highlighted/selected colour assignments
and then generates files that can be fed to spumux.
