Why would Scenarist be so slow? Is it written in Java or Dotnet or
something?

DVDAuthor is fast because the structures it has to construct are
actually rather small compared to the space taken up by the actual
video. Most of its processing time is spent waiting for I/O as it copies
the video into the generated directory structure.

Surely Scenarist is doing the same thing?

Most of it was, I understand, the work of Scott Smith. The part I
really take my hat off to is the painstaking reverse-engineering of all
the fiddly low-level details that you have to get right before a
DVD-Video player will actually play your disc.

All this was done before I came along. My main contribution was to fix a
few bugs, lift a few irritating restrictions, and try to compile the
publicly-available DVD-Video documentation in one place.
