I have an older Sampo player that hangs if it sees something unusual
in the stream's timestamps. The affected DVDs (produced by some software
that was once popular with conferences and documentaries) play fine on
other players. Even if it is unlikely, it may be possible that the webcam
output is triggering something in your player.

In short, I would not assume that the problem has to be with dvdauthor
or the menu complexity. Just maybe ...

At any rate, please do keep experimenting and let us know what you find
out.

  Cheers,

  Mike
