There are some GUI front-ends around that let you do the DVD-Video
authoring at a simpler level, if you prefer. The list here
<http://dvdauthor.sourceforge.net/> may be a bit out of date--I haven’t

That’s right. That can be a fiddly process. That’s why I wrote DVD Menu
Animator <https://github.com/ldo/dvd_menu_animator>. This lets you
design the basic menu layout using Inkscape, then bring it into my tool
to assign highlight and selection colours, after which it will generate
the three images and accompanying XML control file for driving spumux.

That you control via commands in the <post> section. The commands can
pause, loop back to the beginning again, or jump somewhere else.

The whole DVDAuthor suite operates at quite a low level. On the one
hand this requires more learning just to do simple things; but on the
other hand it gives you access to more of the potential power offered
by the DVD-Video spec.
