Canon EOS350D without CF

Hi,
I could not find an unambiguous information on whether is it
possible to capture images with EOS 350D without a memory card
installed. In my case the capture only works with the CF installed.
Without CF (the camera is set to work without CF in the menu)
gphoto2 --capture-image or --capture-image-and-download command
causes the shutter release and then hangs until ctrl-c. So, is it
possible to capture without CF or not?
