I've used an A520 plugged into a USB 2.0 port on a computer (not
recently, though: the USB connector stopped working after I
accidentally knocked the camera off the table while it was plugged
in).  As I recall, it was a bit finicky about the precise order of
operations when connecting it to a computer: with the camera turned
off and disconnected from the computer, put it in playback mode.
Power it up, still disconnected, and once it's ready to go, plug it
in.  At this point, it should show up in dmesg/lsusb regardless of
drivers.
