D5200 works fine, I almost bought a D3200 instead.  And because the
drivers make everything work the same way I can use the same libgphoto
program I wrote with my Canon Powershot S70.  If it's in the
compatibility list it should work.

Coolpix generally isn't compatible but you'd have to check that model.

The D3200 is more compatible than the A900 but both should at least do
something.  Specific models have pitfalls like I can't remotely focus
my D5200
