I'd get the file access and directory scanning out of the equation at least as a test. Try something like gphoto2 --capture-image-and-download Does it depend on the storage media? That script should work the same way with any camera that Gphoto can trigger, try a different one. My Nikon D5200 and Canon S70 work interchangeably, even with a C program written using libgphoto2. So this locked up camera is capable of running a script? That seems odd. By "locked up" you mean it won't take more pictures? Why do you shoot a bunch and let them sit there? Oh, maybe it does a directory scan at the start and suddenly having new files it hasn't seen (taken during the download) throws it for a loop. It's doing one thing, doesn't expect you to be doing something else meanwhile. Seems like it almost could be considered a bug but you're doing something that was never expected. If you don't take more pictures in the 30 seconds then it finishes? Is there a large number (over 100) of photos on the card? Just the time to index and sort them could be significant.
