Thanks for this.  This is what I get:

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ gphoto2 -f /store_00020001/DCIM --rmdir 100CANON

*** Error ***
PTP General Error
*** Error (-1: 'Unspecified error') ***

Or:

env LANG=C gphoto2 --debug --debug-logfile=my-logfile.txt -f
/store_00020001/DCIM --rmdir 100CANON

*** Error ***
PTP General Error
*** Error (-1: 'Unspecified error') ***

I have attached a logfile, in case it is any use.  I also tried a number
of similar alternatives with and without quotes and with and without '='
signs.

I would comment that sometimes I get 'Unspecified error' and sometimes
unknown directory.

Thanks,

Steve.
