Wow. I see these capture devices being dirt cheap. This might be a
better path after all. But I still would like see if gphoto2 can do
what that Canon webcam tool promises (no Windows box to test that one
might try a VM with USB passthrough …).

I had it on video. I now tested it on M. Result: 8 fps (81 frames in 10
s). Downside is that I don't see live video on the display (goes black
on capture). Ideally, I'd like to be able to see the video on the
camera besides the computer.

Same on Av and Tv. Blank display and 8 fps out of the camera. In video
mode, where I get the preview on the display, it's 4 fps.

I got Firmware 1.0.1 on the thing. Is that a difference? There exists
1.0.5. I'll have to research how to update that. OK, simple. I am
trying with 1.0.5 now.

Interesting that the resolution is higher for the 550D, while I get
960x640 here.

But meh, after the update to 1.0.5, it is not different. 4 fps in video
mode, 8 fps in photo mode. It occured to me that the cabling might be
bad, but it is at least reported as USB 2 device:

But since it worked for you … there must be something I can do. I also
tried a different cable, still the same performance. Maybe we got some
funky regression in the software stack someplace?
