I am not sure what you have seen there regarding video quality. I
simply see exactly the contents of the internal display on my big
screen via HDMI, including an ugly grey frame around the picture and
some black borders in addition. The monitor tells me that it gets 1080i
(interlaced, really?). The apparently resolution is rather blurry, I
suspect that this is at least not more pixels than the internal display.

This is in stark contrast to viewing an image on the SD card. That
switches into a differing display mode without any grey border and it
looks sharper. So I guess you don't really get more video resolution
out of the live view than what the processor prepares for the internal
display, it's just upscaled to 1080i. Do you have any old recordings to
confirm that?

I precisely want manual focus, so that's fine. I do would like to see
the live video, though.

I re-checked the framerates after some fiddling with the camera,
switching around battery (it refused to take pictures and I feared that
I broke it with the firmware update … but apparently it was only
confused after the HDMI stuff). Just now I got 72 frames in 10 seconds
in video mode with preview on the display.

But it's getting less and less 87 (photo mode) … 72, 68 … but then
again 85 in photo mode It's consistently more there, but the number in
video mode can get close. I'm trying a 30 second video now. 234 frames,
close to 8 fps. Again photo mode … 283 frames, 9 fps. It's a bit
faster, but not that much, consistently.
