Another data point: I had the chance to test an EOS 1300D. That one
gives (in Av mode) 182 frames in 10 s. This is still off the prescribed
25 fps in movie.jpeg, though. And it's 1056x704 pixels, btw.

So the newer hardware works better, but since it is still not at the
rate it should be, I rekindle my hope that gphoto2 could be optimized
to deliver the true potential. I guess 18 fps live video with a modern
model was good enough for most purposes, and so people stoppped
optimizing the communication — although it is rather useless for recording
movies as there is no proper timing. I do wonder how that communication
looks, does gphoto2 have to ask for and confirm each frame, or should
it just be a stream of data that is digested as fast as possible?
