Strange `IMG_E` files from an iPhone

I've run across some apparently corrupted image files and I'm not sure
if it's caused by gphoto or just a quirk of the iPhone.

File #373 has extension `.HEIC` but type `image/jpeg`:

    $ gphoto2 --list-files | grep 0679
    #216   IMG_0679.AAE               rd     1 KB application/x-unknown
    #217   IMG_0679.HEIC              rd  3481 KB 3024x4032 image/jpeg
    #218   IMG_0679.MOV               rd  2165 KB video/quicktime
    #373   IMG_E0679.HEIC             rd  3449 KB 3024x4032 image/jpeg
    #374   IMG_E0679.MOV              rd  2165 KB video/quicktime

It does appear to be a JPEG—

    $ gphoto2 --get-file 373
    Saving file as IMG_E0679.HEIC
    $ file IMG_E0679.HEIC
    IMG_E0679.HEIC: JPEG image data, Exif standard: [TIFF image data,
big-endian, direntries=13, manufacturer=Apple, model=iPhone XS,
orientation=upper-left, xresolution=186, yresolution=194,
resolutionunit=2, software=12.3.1, datetime=2019:06:09 18:38:36],
baseline, precision 8, 3024x4032, components 3

—but something is wrong with it:

    $ display IMG_E0679.HEIC
    display-im6.q16: Premature end of JPEG file `IMG_E0679.HEIC' @
warning/jpeg.c/JPEGWarningHandler/386.
    display-im6.q16: Corrupt JPEG data: premature end of data segment
`IMG_E0679.HEIC' @ warning/jpeg.c/JPEGWarningHandler/386.
    display-im6.q16: Corrupt JPEG data: found marker 0xd9 instead of
RST6 `IMG_E0679.HEIC' @ warning/jpeg.c/JPEGWarningHandler/386.
    [60 similar lines omitted]

Approximately the last quarter is displayed as solid gray:

    $ jp2a --height=16 IMG_E0679.HEIC
    Premature end of JPEG file
    ,.';xdc;''::,,';; .:o:,.
    ,',',,'','....:lxc,,;:l:
    ;,',.','..',..cldco...:l
    ;::,,;,..:dllc::;oox;..,
    cc,,,:l,',cll:c,,,::::..
    ;;,;ldoko',.;l:;'..,c:c'
    clodx:,lcc:.'.cocc...;lc
    ::cc;  .;lco,..'odo;..,c
    xll:ol'...cldo....:oo,..
    dco,ccco,..,coo;...kxc:,
    xc,;:cdoll;,.,:cl,.. ,cc
    occ;,',coooc...,cdl'..,l
    llllllllllllllllllllllll
    llllllllllllllllllllllll
    llllllllllllllllllllllll
    llllllllllllllllllllllll

The size is about right so I don't think it's simply truncated:

    $ ls --size IMG_E0679.HEIC
    3452 IMG_E0679.HEIC

Several images are behaving like this consistently. They're all named
in the format `IMG_E????.HEIC` (`E` for “edited”?), but not all so
named images are visibly affected.

Any idea what's going on?
