Unlocking playback button and display

Hi

When I connect my Nikon D500 it locks the playback button and the 
display. GPhoto detects the camera and I can put into wait-event mode, 
but I would like to be able to  use the playback and mark photos as 
protected to have code react to the change event.

I have tried to add the parameter --set-config controlmode=0 but it 
doesn't make any difference. The top display doesn't say PC, unless I 
use controlmode=1.

Any advise on how to be able to have GPhoto monitor the camera but still 
have access to the playback button?
