Hi,
I've become very frustrated with CD players lately. I've been using kscd
as that comes as the default with Mandrake. I recently upgraded to Mandrake
10 and found that kscd has become even less user friendly than before
so I started looking round for an alternative. In my search I came
across grip, which looks promising, but still falls short of my ideal.
Here's a list of what I consider to be problems:
I can't find any way to turn off looping at the end of a CD.
I dug around in the code and found something called playloop
which is initialise to TRUE, but there's no way to set it FALSE.
I've got around this temprarily by editing the source to set it
FALSE and recompiling, but this doesn't seem to be ideal...
When you 'PAUSE' a CD, I expect it do stop playing and wait until
I press it again. kscd does the first bit, but after ~30 seconds
it ejects the CD (didn't use to). Grip isn't quite so bad, it just
resumes playing. It's possible that this may be a quirk in my
kernel, but does it happen on other systems?
If I get a new CD which hasn't got a CDDB entry, or I don't like
the entry as found, or I'm offline, I don't mind typing in the
details. However, when I do so, Grip and kscd both insist on
playing the track I'm editing, which I find annoying - 20secs
of one track, then 20 sec of another... Even if I stop play,
it restarts as soon as I move to another track. There should
be some way to avoid this.
The only problem with grip (as opposed to kscd) is that it doesn't
show the track details in 'condensed' mode.
Having got that off my chest, I'd just say that grip looks good,
and I'll be using it from here on.
