The (Socket 7) system has an on-board sound-blaster compatible chip-set,  
and the CD plays just fine when I put it in and close the door.  The cd  
player interface pops up when it begins to play.  (Of course, this does  
not happen when grip is running.)

Can the CD play automatically like this if the cable weren't connected?

If I click the CD "mute" in the Volume controls, the sound stops.

So, grip reads the CD track and displays the track information, but when I  
click play, it says "no disc".

grip --verbose reports:
Drive status is 4
CDStat fonud a disc, checking tracks
We have a valid disc!
Drive status is 4

Now I click "play", and immediately after clicking "play" in grip the  
display shows

Drive status is 3
No disc
CDStat says no disc
Checking for a new disc
Drive status is 4
Drive status is 4
CDStat found a disc, checking tracks
We have a valid disc!
Drive status is 4

???
