I'm not sure if it helps, but did you see the Config -> Misc tab? 
Check "the Allow high bits in filenames" option, and maybe also use the
"Characters to not strip in filenames".

If it does not work, make sure your locale is set correctly (if you
don't know what that means, type "locale" in an xterm an post the output).
