You probably haven't got a cable between you CD-player and your 
soundcard to transfere sound the analog way... or you have the CDin 
channel on your soundcard muted.

could be solved either by attaching the cable or by reading the CDs 
through digital extraction. (The CD-in plugin for xmms can do that)

or by unmuting the CD channel on your soundcard, check your mixer settings.


BTW some CDs transferre digital signals  through a thin 2-wire cable 
too...   but usually what you want is a 3-wire cable from your CD or DVD 
to your soundcard.
