increase rip performance

I'm using Grip on my Gnome desktop in Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy.  I've
successfully configured it to use the latest lame, flac and oggenc
encoders at various quality settings.   My question concerns ripping
speed using Grip cdparanoia:  is 5-6x normal?  Even if I disable
paranoia the most I get is 1-2X increase.  (cdda2wav by comparison is
15x-20x!)

My hardware: 40X cdrom read speed, 1.6GHz Sempron, 512MB ram. 

I downloaded and compiled the latest cdparanoia (10prev0) but it doesn't
seem to do any better than the 9.8 stable.  DMA is on. 

Do I need to try scsi emulation and how much extra speed does it yield? 
(there's no 'sg' line under 'block devices' in 'cat /proc/devices' so I
guess it's not configured).  Where exactly does the line 'hdx=ide-scsi'
('hdc' in my case) go?  Here's my GRUB menu.lst:

title        Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.17-10-generic
root        (hd0,2)
kernel        /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-10-generic root=/dev/hda3 ro quiet splash

Do I put it on the 'kernel' line at the end after 'splash'?  Do I add
'append' or anything?

I just don't want to screw up and make it unbootable!
