I'm usually not behind a proxy with grip, but I use wwwoffle for web
browsing. I tried grip over the proxy and I can see a few requests and
answers in wwwoffle's spool.

I only set "Use proxy server", and "Proxy server" localhost and "Proxy
port" 8080, no username or password.

As the proxy server is on the same machine as grip, grip still could use
a direct connection, though. I have no idea how I could filter grip's
(possible) requests on port 80, but still let wwwoffle's requests pass
through.

Trying with "strace -e network -f -o grip.strace grip", I can only find
connections to 127.0.0.1.

This is with grip 3.3.1. In response to your question a week ago,
somebody else also reported that grip works fine behind a proxy.

Did you check simple things like "the proxy server's name changed"? 
Is it perhaps an IPv6 issue (bad configuration etc.)?
Can you try with strace and see to which host it wants to connect?
