Status tab shows everything worked fine but in reality no files are ripped/encoded.

Hi all,
I am using Grip 3.2.0 on Debian Sarge (2.4 kernel –
Gnome). Here is my problem.

I put an audio cd in the cdrom drive, I start Grip and
I click on Rip+Encode. I choose the 
Status tab and I watch Grip reporting the following in
the Status tab:

Ripping track 1 to
/home/john/music/grip/oasis/stop_the_clocks_disk1/rock_n_roll_star.wav
Rip finished
1:Encoding to
home/john/music/grip/oasis/stop_the_clocks_disk1/rock_n_roll_star.ogg
Ripping track 2 to
home/john/music/grip/oasis/stop_the_clocks_disk1/some_might_say.wav
Finished encoding on cpu 0
Deleting
[home/john/music/grip/oasis/stop_the_clocks_disk1/rock_n_roll_star.wav]
Rip finished
...and so on until all selected tracks have been
ripped, encoded and the wav version deleted.

However, the problem is that when I go to find the
ogg, files they do not exist. And the whole process
lasts about 5 seconds (for 9 tracks!), which means
that no rip and encoding has taken place. Grip thinks
it has done the job but it hasn't. Does anybody know
where I should start looking for the solution to this
problem?
