SoundJuicer is a frontend for a ripping application that will get the
music by ripping the CD. But the play option in GRIP just sends a play
command and let it go through the audio connector on the CD drive.

If you are convinced that SoundJuicer is sending it through the audio
connector of the drive as well you can prove it by disconnecting the
audio cable from the drive.
