replaced cdrom with dvd, now grip can't see the tracks

Hi,
Is there an FAQ for newbies like myself? I couldn't find reference to one other than the ~11 item one at http://nostatic.org/grip/doc/ar01s05.html.
I
downloaded grip to try it out with my old CDROM drive. I like the GUI and the automation
features -- the design appears right on target -- but I can't make it rip.
It didn't seem to
respond to the "abort" buttons, when I pressed these buttons the progress
indicators don't reset to zero or otherwise clear.
When I tried to
rip and encode an entire CD, grip stopped "ripping and encoding" at the end
of track 1 every time -- I'm guessing during the encode? I don't have
any way to troubleshoot this.
I started using cdparanoia "command line" and it became clear that ripping was not reliable -- tracks would be aborted quite frequently. On a hunch I replaced my cdrom with a newer dvd drive, and that seemed to help -- cdparanoia "command line" started working much better and was able to consistently rip all tracks.
However, now when I start grip it doesn't seem to "see" any of the tracks on the cd.
I'm clueless how to proceed.
Is there any "verbose logging" or any other debug tools I can turn on to determine what the problem is?
